About Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is the laid-back cultural capital of northern Thailand, a mountain-ringed city with a completely different rhythm from Bangkok. Its historic core sits within a square moat and crumbling old walls, packed with hundreds of ornate Buddhist temples where saffron-robed monks go about their day. The pace is gentle, the prices low, and the welcome warm.

Life here revolves around its markets and its setting. The sprawling weekend walking-street markets and the nightly bazaars are a feast of crafts and street food, while the surrounding jungle-clad hills offer waterfalls, ethical elephant sanctuaries, and hill-tribe villages. A relaxed café culture and low cost of living have also made the city a magnet for long-stay travelers and digital nomads.

The cool, dry season from November to February is the most pleasant time to visit. The hot season that follows can be intense, and the burning of farmland in roughly February to April sometimes brings smoky haze, while the summer rains turn the hills lush and green.
