About Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City, still widely known as Saigon, is Vietnam's largest and most frenetic metropolis, a place of relentless energy where rivers of motorbikes flow past gleaming towers and colonial landmarks. The buzzing central District 1 holds the French-era Notre-Dame Cathedral and ornate Central Post Office, the sprawling Ben Thanh Market, and a nightlife that keeps late hours. Crossing the street here is an art form in itself.

The city carries a weighty recent history, movingly told at the War Remnants Museum and in the underground network of the Cu Chi Tunnels within a day trip of the center. Between the sights, the street food is reason enough to visit, from bowls of pho and banh mi to the sludgy-sweet local coffee, best enjoyed perched on a low stool watching the city roar past.

The city is hot and tropical year-round. The dry season from December to April is the most comfortable time to visit, while the wet season from May to November brings short, heavy afternoon downpours.
