About Los Angeles

Los Angeles is less a single city than a sprawling constellation of neighborhoods spread between the mountains and the sea. It is the home of Hollywood and the entertainment industry, and the glamour is real, from the Walk of Fame to the hillside sign and the sweeping views from the Griffith Observatory. Getting around means embracing the car and the freeway, but the payoff is enormous variety.

Each district feels like its own town. The beach cities of Santa Monica and Venice bring boardwalks and ocean sunsets, Downtown and Silver Lake supply the arts and dining edge, and Beverly Hills delivers the postcard version of LA wealth. Above all it is a food city, where some of the best meals are found at strip-mall taquerías and food trucks as often as marquee restaurants.

The weather is a big part of the appeal, warm and sunny for much of the year with low humidity. Summers are hot and reliably dry, winters are mild with the occasional rainy spell, and the ocean keeps the coastal areas temperate.
