Marrakech

Marrakech assaults the senses in the best way, a red-walled imperial city where the past feels vividly present. At its heart is the medina, a labyrinth of souks where merchants sell spices, lanterns, leather, and carpets, all spilling toward the great square of Jemaa el-Fnaa. By night the square fills with food stalls, musicians, and storytellers, turning into open-air theater.

Behind unassuming medina walls, traditional riads open onto tranquil tiled courtyards, a cool retreat from the bustle outside. Beyond the old city, the Majorelle Garden offers a shady, cobalt-blue oasis, and the modern Gueliz district brings contemporary cafés and boutiques. Marrakech also makes a natural base for trips to the Atlas Mountains and the edge of the Sahara.

Spring and fall bring warm, comfortable days ideal for exploring. Summers are intensely hot, especially in the exposed square and souks, while winters are mild by day and can turn surprisingly cool after dark.
