About Siem Reap
Siem Reap is the lively Cambodian town that serves as the gateway to Angkor, the vast temple complex of the ancient Khmer Empire. The crowning glory is Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world, breathtaking at sunrise, but the wider site holds dozens more, from the serene stone faces of Angkor Thom to the jungle-swallowed ruins of Ta Prohm, where giant tree roots grip the temple walls.
The town itself has grown into a welcoming base with plenty to enjoy after a day among the ruins. Buzzing night markets and the restaurants and bars of Pub Street cater to travelers, while the floating villages and stilt houses of the great Tonlé Sap lake offer a glimpse of a very different way of life nearby.
The dry season from November to April is the most comfortable time to explore the temples, with cooler, clearer conditions early on. The wet season brings heat, humidity, and afternoon downpours, but also lush greenery and reflecting pools around the ruins.
